Twenty-three years ago today, America’s homeland was viciously attacked. The collapse of the World Trade Center, the attack at the Pentagon, and Flight 93 forever altered our nation.
Lives were permanently changed. Families were destroyed. Heroes were lost.

We are all, no doubt, familiar with the tragic fate of Flight 93 and those brave patriots aboard who gave their own lives to save others. It is one of the most powerful depictions of American heroism on that day. Yet scattered throughout the horrible memory of 9/11 are countless stories of ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things. They were businessmen, secretaries, and janitors; firefighters, police officers, and EMTs. They were fathers, mothers, grandparents, and siblings.
They had dreams and hopes for their futures. They left behind families that are forced to face the unbearable grief every day. They lost all of their tomorrows twenty-three years ago today.
2,977 people were killed in the attacks of 9/11. It has been said that about 20% of all Americans knew someone hurt or killed.
To me, they are what Patriot Day is all about โ honoring their memory and remembering their spirit of courage. They represent everything America is.
May we never forget.
