An Appeal To Teach History Again

I grew up in a different world than most of my peers. You see, on any given day in my house, you would find my siblings and I playing make believe of some of the greatest heroes of American history. My parents taught us history from the time we were young children. We took it and ran with it.

One day you may have found us traipsing across the prairie in our covered wagons. On another, we were courageously fighting off Indians from the solitude of a Cavalry Post.

With our imaginations we were transported back to some of the most incredible days of our Nation’s history. We reenacted Bunker Hill and the Battle of Ticonderoga, the Alamo and Valley Forge.

Our heroes were people like Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, Molly Pitcher and Sybil Ludington, Nathan Hale and Jim Bowie.

We didn’t watch much television growing up, but on the occasions that we did, you could bet your bottom dollar it was some of the oldies but goodies. Shows that taught patriotism and history to us like, Liberty’s Kids and Daniel Boone (yes, I’m biased and the ones with Fess Parker are the only ones that can even be considered in the equation. He made literally the best Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett that television has ever known). We watched and rewatched Walt Disney’s 1955 Davy Crockett, The Swamp Fox and Jonny Tremain.

The real life people the shows were inspired by were our heroes. While, not every single thing portrayed in these movies and TV shows were always 100% accurate, they did instill in us a love for history that could not be shaken.

Recently, I have been increasingly aware of the lack of patriotism in those of my own generation and the upcoming one. It breaks my heart.

And the question that rose in my mind was, why? Why do we have children who don’t care about anything going on in their country? Why do we have a generation that is only concerned about if they have wifi or something to watch on TV? Why do we have young Americans who hate America?

Many people would tell you that it’s because we have nothing to be proud of in our history. They claim that our heritage is one of hate and racism.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The crisis of kids who lack patriotism today is not for lack of incredible examples for them to look up to. It’s a matter of children not being taught the heroic parts of our history.

I mean, in all honesty, what kid wouldn’t look up to someone like Nathan Hale or Daniel Boone? Look at the incredible things they did! Any little kid would gladly look to them as a role model, if they knew the stories behind these legends.

But that’s just the thing. Vital pieces of our history are being removed from our schools, because those with corrupt agendas know that courage inspires courage. Patriotism inspires more Patriotism.

Courage inspires Courage. Patriotism inspires Patriotism.

Think about it. Throughout history, this fact has been proven. When groups of American soldiers were captured in various wars we have fought, many times the enemy would separate the officers and those filled with resistance from the rest of the POWs. Why? Because courage inspires courage. Resistance in the face of the enemy inspires resistance in the face of the enemy.

Why is it that in Communist countries that are trying to stamp out the gospel, they make Bibles illegal? It’s because the Bible fuels a believer’s passion to witness to others.

The enemy knows that if they take away the source of fuel from the fire, they are better able to staunch the flames.

Why are most kids of my generation, and certainly the next generation, clueless as to even who half of these people were?

Because a generation that has nothing to inspire them to greatness is a generation easier enslaved.

It’s far easier to be a Patriot if you have examples to look back on. But it’s going to be harder for someone to be willing to lay down their life for their country if they were never taught, for instance, about a young man who regretted only being able to die for his country once.

It’s easier to be a strong believer when we have examples to encourage us along the way. That’s why God gave us so many in His Word!

The attack on our children is going virtually unopposed. We are playing right in to the plan to destroy our history, heritage, and country. Now is the time to be inspiring our own generations and the ones after us to dive into our history.

Teach your kids the Bible, first and foremost. And after that, teach them America’s great history! Teach them about the men and women who made us what we are.

Tell them of the days when we weren’t free, when tyranny ruled over us. Tell them what it was like before men were free, when the blood of our fathers and mothers watered the soil. Tell them, so they don’t ever forget.

From this point forward, some of you may forever look at me like I’m insane. And that’s okay.

Some of you may think I’m a bit overly passionate on the subject.

Yes, I’m passionate about it. But that’s because I’ve studied enough history to know what happens when history is not known by the common people.

If you only take one thing away from this post today, let it be this: Courage inspires Courage.

Another way that my siblings and I were instilled with a love for history was through songs that taught us history! I was thinking I might do a post in the future sharing with you some of the historical songs we adored growing up, but we’ll see.

What are your thoughts about the attack on our history? Would you like to see a post of history songs in the future? Let me know in the comments!

  1. So true!
As you said teach the Bible first. It is full of great heroes of the faith: Daniel, Gideon, Stephen, Lydia, Deborah, Miriam, Jochabed, the little Israelite slave girl, David, Paul, and on and on. That should inspire biblical fervor and courage!
    Secondly, YES….teach them history!
I would love a post on patriotic songs of yesteryear.๐Ÿ’“

    • Your post are always so thought provoking. It is so true that the public schools are trying to change our history and take out what they donโ€™t like. Itโ€™s important that we teach the next generation the truth. The word of God , American history and also world history. if we donโ€™t learn, from the past, we are doomed to repeat itโ€™s mistakes.
