Honoring D-Day: Remembering Sacrifice and Liberty

D-Day.

The day that liberated a continent. The day that preserved the freedom we enjoy so much today. The day that saw many heroes spill their blood and give their lives, not for the lust of conquest but to end conquest.

It was a day that forever altered the course of history for the better. Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers stormed the gates of evil that day for the very principles our nation was founded on — that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that among these is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As news reached the Homefront that the invasion of Hitler’s Fortress Europe had begun, millions flocked to churches across our nation to pray for the success and protection of our soldiers and sailors; to call on Almighty God to intervene and protect the flame of liberty. Today, 81 years later, let us hit our knees in thanksgiving for the freedom that has been given to us at so high a cost.

“At the core, the American citizen soldiers knew the difference between right and wrong, and they didn’t want to live in a world in which wrong prevailed. So, they fought and won, and we, all of us, living and yet to be born, must be forever profoundly grateful.”
